Difference between Plasma and LCD screens

The bulky Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV sets are now being replaced by thin and flat display technologies like plasma and LCD.Both plasma and LCD may look same at first, but there is a big difference in the underlying technologies used in these displays. With technology difference comes advantage and disadvantages for each of these.

The Liquid Crystal Display uses arrays or layers of liquid crystals between two glass plates and requires backlight.Depending upon the electrical charges applied to liquid crystal it hides or blocks certain colors of pixels(out of Red ,Green and Blue) and produces the image.

Plasma technology is popular in segment of larger displays. In this technolgy there is a rectangular array of gas cells which produces different colors through lighting of pixels.

Plasma TV has better refresh rate than LCD TV.As LCD takes time to reproduce images so quick movements are not clear in LCD display. But now a days even LCD tvs are coming with good refresh rate.

Plasama screens provide better viewing angles so that you can watch TV with clarity form different angles of room. This gap is also being reduced day by day by newer LCD screens.

LCD screen has less weight and less power consumption compared to plasma screens.

Plasma screen produces rich color and brightness compared to LCD.Black color is dispalyed accurately in plasma so images look more realistic.

The life span of LCD screen is more compared to plasma screen.

It is easy to wall mount LCD screens, But you need professional help for wall mounting of large plasma screens.

The another problem with plasma screen is "screen burn" which happens if an image is left for a longer time. This problem is rare in LCD screens.
