svchost facts

svchost is a generic host process and is resposible for running a number of services from various DLLs(Dynamic Link Libraaries). If you find multiple instances of svchost.exe in your active process list(Task Manager->process) then there is no need to worry beause your windows Operating System uses each of this process for running a different group of services. To know which are services running under each instance of this process type Tasklist /SVC in your command line and check.

You can find svchost.exe in your System32 folder.Even if you go to services.msc and check any service for eg Network connections when you go see its path to executable you will find that it is svchost.exe residing in your system32 folder with some parameter like -k netsvcs.

svchost.exe may also cause a point of vulnerability to your system.there can also be a trojan using this name to get your personal data passwords or key hits and sending this information to a remote computer without your knowledge.

As you said that this is taking most of the memory of your system then go to services.msc and check under which account each instance of this process is running if it is running under System,Local Service or Network Service then its ok if it is running under your account stop that.If you find svchost.exe at any other location than its exact path then you can remove it.If your problem is not solved by doing this ,get some good antivirus.
