The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai, the first of its kind in South East Asia was founded in the year 1954 by the All India Women’s Central Food Council under the leadership of Late Smt. Lilavati Munshi.

The purpose was to improve the nutritional status of the average from a high cereal diet to a more balanced diet. The critical factor however was to find trained personnel to run these Annapoornas on a self-financing basis. Hence the birth of the training Institute - IHM Mumbai.

Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition, Kolkata was founded way back in 1963 with its temporary campus located at 21, Convent Road. It started with a total number of 16 students only: Gradually it gained in popularity and the number of students also grew in leaps and bounds. In the year 1980 the institute was shifted to the new building with a campus at P-16, Taratala Road which is the present address. Within the campus, quarters for principal, faculty and staff are located along with separate hostels for boys and girls.

Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition ( IHMCT&AN), Hajipur has come into existence in the year 1997 after upgradation of earlier Food Craft Institute, Patna (Society) which was set up in 1982 by Department of Tourism under Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Govt. of India. Food Craft Institute was managed by the Govt. of India till 1987 and onwards 1987 it was handed over to Govt. of Bihar , for further operation. Food Craft Institute was a registered Society under the Society Registration Act. (1860)
